oDesk: Starting From Scratch

oDesk
Finally, I was able to write something for my blog. This time I will tell you how you will start from scratch in oDesk.com. I will tell you my personal experiences of how I started.

Okay, here we go. You might have read my first 2 posts about oDesk, but if you haven't yet, it would be great to do so. The first 2 posts will give you a bit of an idea how oDesk works.

The Starting Line

So, after registering an account with oDesk.com, freelancers need to take the oDesk readiness test. This is the very first step you need to take because you will not get any job without taking this test. The answers to this particular test are mostly "all of the above" and some questions can be answered by your common sense. This test contains 10 questions where 8 of them can be answered using "all of the above."

After passing the oDesk readiness test, take time to add your educational background, past experiences (your past jobs, employment, etc.), your expertise. This will boost your "profile completeness." Your profile completeness will show employers or buyers how serious you are to work online and how legit you are.

Add a neat profile picture and some of your work samples as portfolios. Doing these will make you look good and easily searchable for the buyers.

Searching for Jobs

This is the next step for you to take. But first, you must know what you are capable of, what you can do and not. My tagline is always "Don't overpromise, be realistic." Buyers really love freelancers who are realistic at offering what they can do and not. Be honest of when you can deliver the goods/services. Be true to what you promise your buyer. Doing such will lead you to many projects (just like me.. LOL!).

If you are good at writing, then look for writing jobs. If you are well grounded in the computer language, go for technical jobs (most of them pay very good).

Just search for the keyword of the job you want to apply to. For example, you are an article writer. You just need to type in "writer" and then results will come up and choose one that you seem good for you.

Winning the Bid

Once you have chosen the job posting you want to send an application to, check on the average bid. It is not advisable to send the lowest bid as you will not enjoy doing the job.

What you need to do is:

1. Follow all the requirements that the hiring manager asks
2. Write a good application letter
3. Check on the average bid
4. Quote a reasonable price

These are my 4 steps to winning good projects. Trust me! They're proven. :)

I guess this will end my blog for today. I hope this will help new freelancers out there in grabbing those projects and start earning with me.

Odesk.com My New Company?

Working from Home
While registering my account at Odesk.com, I found it very tiring to fill out every detail asked. I thought that these details are not that important. However, I just filled them all out thinking that I would benefit from them soon.

Before anything else, I would like to explain to you:

* What is Odesk.com?
* What can you benefit from Odesk.com?
* Is Odesk.com for employers too?
* The Downside to Odesk.com

What is Odesk.com? Odesk.com is an outsourcing website company. Its primary goal is to give many opportunities to freelancers who would like to sell their services. For example, I am a writer and I want to earn $$$ from writing, I will search for jobs that are under the writing category, technical writing, ghost writing, and so on. Basically, it's a website where you can earn real income by selling out your services.

The best thing about Odesk.com is that it is 100% free. Beware of those other outsourcing sites or websites that ask for money before giving you work. Those are totally fakes! Thankfully, I was not scammed by those rip-offs.

What can you benefit from Odesk.com? Oh my, I really love to talk about this one! There are so many benefits that you can get from working at Odesk.com. Here are a few of them:

* Be your own boss (i love this one!)
* Work any time you want, as long as you finish or submit your work to your client on or before the due date
* Take your break any time you want (lol)
* Play your favorite music as loud as you want without getting reprimanded (oh yeah!)
* Forget the pay day! Get paid any time you want!

Is Odesk.com for employers too?

Yes it is! I have had the chance to become one! The pricing is really cheap and there are no hidden fees in your credit card or debit car (this is what I am using). The advantage of the employers for using Odesk.com is that they can choose from many different freelancers. They will have the option of selecting the best freelancer by means of an interview.

The downside to Odesk.com

In general, Odesk.com provides opportunities for both employees and employers. I think the only downside to working at Odesk.com com is the initial set up of your account. I would say that it is tiring and might consume a lot of your time. However, this con is easily offset after the registration. With all the thousands of work that you can choose from, you will surely find the work that's right for you!

I am Freelancer John!

My name is John Revo, a freelancer.

Hi everyone! My name is John Revo and I am an online freelancer. This is my very first blog site ever and I want to share with you what I have found and will find online that are going to be useful and beneficial in our daily lives.

I'm going to make this blog site as my personal journal or as I would say "online diary." In this blog I will share everything that made me a successful online freelancer on both Odesk.com, Elance.com and anywhere else in the web.

Before I became a freelancer, I was working at a call center company in Clark Field, Pampanga. That was in October of 2009 when I got hired to become a technical support representative for a multi-billion dollar company - Microsoft. To be particular, I was a technical support representative for XBOX 360. Being a tech support rep is tough but enjoyable at the same time. What I mean is that even though it's hard to deal with irate customers, getting those prank calls is enjoyable. It's very stress-relieving to get prank callers on the line. You will know what I mean if you have dealt with one!

It was not long when the XBOX 360 account was removed from our company and was transferred to other call center sites. It was officially removed on the 25th of June 2010. I was so down at that moment, but what can I do? I need to move on and find another job; perhaps another account?

On that same week, I got an interview for a customer support position. And this time, it is for Target.com. Well, to make the long story short, I did not enjoy working at the said account. Due to the high volume of calls received every day and the people that I'm working with are boring and power-hungry, every day was like forever. So I decided to quit and find a decent job, this time to be my own boss!

After resigning from my company, my brother told me about online work - at home. He introduced me to Odesk.com, and let me view his earnings making my jaw drop after seeing how much he's earning! All of a sudden, I thought "What have I done? Why did I wasted so much time and effort on my previous company?" So,  I moved on and registered for an account at Odesk.com.
